I was blown away...

Last night JTC and I went to a Tin Pan South show at 3rd. We went expecting to see Jeffrey Steele, Billy Ray Cyrus, Jimmy Webb and Rivers Rutherford. As we were waiting in line, they let us know that Jeffrey and Billy weren't going to make it.

Then, they told us who was going to fill in and I was ELATED. Beth Nielsen Chapman (who I had stood in line to see Wednesday night at the Bluebird Cafe eventhough the show was sold out. It was worth a shot, but I didn't get in. Ended up going to Douglas Corner to see Michael Johnson instead... but that is another story!) was on her way. Then, when we got inside we found out that Jimmy Wayne was also coming to help save the day.

YAAAAhaHAhooo.

I knew it was going to be good... but I had no idea just how good. The whole thing was an incredible experience. If you click the links above to see who these artists are... you'll understand what I mean.

Last night's gig

Had an EXCELLENT time meeting and greeting with everyone at Patricia's Next Number One party last night. A little rain didn't stop the fun, either. Everything was moved inside which made it more cozy and fun.

Over the whole night, I'd say about 200 people wandered in and out. Tons of great singer / songwriters took the "stage" and entertained us throughout the night. Kiwamu and I had a blast playing. Everyone was receptive to the two songs we performed and, without any prompting from me, they all started singing along on "Quit Your Bitchin.'" What a riot. (Man... I sure do have fun singin' that song. Feels so GOOOOOD.)

A good time was had by all.

You are invited to join us at the NextNumberOne Music Group, "Meet & Greet" party during Tin Pan South week on Thursday April 7th from 7-10 pm. The "Meet & Greet" will be held at 200 Craig Mead. There will be food and fun...lots of networking and great music. We are expecting close to 150 people.

A stage & sound system will be set up for performers. There will be invited performers and if time allows you may be asked to perform as well. Outside there will be songwriters and pickers all about so bring your guitar if you wish to.

Come hungry and plan to stay for awhile. There will be cokes, coffee & tea...if you want anything else to drink, please bring it.

Writing a song in 30 minutes

Tonight is my song coach session with Rick Beresford . I've been going every Tuesday for the past four weeks and it has really helped me find ways to keep the song ideas coming. Love all the creative exercises. I'm looking at songs in a whole new way and coming up with more ideas for new songs every day.

The assignment for tonight was to write a song in 30 minutes.
Can be any song about anything.
It doesn't have to be a hit.
I can do that. (obviously... since I have no hits... yet.)
No problem...right?!

Well, of course, because it is an assignment I've hated all the ideas I've had. Started several songs but realized after more than 30 minutes had passed that they were too deep to write in a short amount of time. When I went to bed last night, I was feeling down that I hadn't come-up with anything cool over the past week... quickly anyway.

At 3:43 this morning, I woke up. My mind was racing about all the things I have going on at work, home, church, musically, etc. For the past two weeks and this week I've got something going on every night... sometimes I've even got two things going on. It's really ridiculous (and my own damn fault!).

Then, it hit me.
Viola!
That was it.
So I got out of bed and wrote a song about my mind racing... in 30 minutes (maybe a few minutes more). The verses are laid back and the chorus is machine gunny. I think it actually is okay. I'll probably end up rewriting it several times over the next couple weeks... but I did it nonetheless!

Whew!
Just in time.
I'll let you know how it goes.
If it really turns out, I might even play it at one of my upcoming gigs (4/24 and 4/29).

Rick liked my idea. I may actually turn it into a real song. HA.
